Manchester shows solidarity and why it matters.

For all those who have told me that a #MuslimBan in a different country is not my business nor the behaviour of its president should matter to me. I say this:

It does matter, and it is my business when an inhumane injustice is taking place. When my kind are being dehumanised and labelled. We are being told that we are lesser human, and therefore have lesser human rights. It does matter, when the media outlets globally, are churning out a narrative which subsequently adds fuel to the flames of hate which have been burning, ignited by leaders who have an agenda greater than what they disclose. It does matter that my day to day is impacted. That I have to remain vigilant of potential attack; verbal or physical. It matters, that there are preventative powers in place, which are created to police my words, my behaviour, and my interactions because I may be "too radical". It matters when my children feel afraid to speak their mind and are more likely to be stopped and searched than their white counterparts. It matters, when my whole faith is allowed to be ridiculed under "freedom of expression" and debated under the guise of "security". It matters when you have seen the aftermath. When you have witnessed how hate can easily turn to war. When friends have become enemies, and when what once was unimaginable becomes a reality.
It matters.
Justice matters.
Freedom matters.
Humanity matters.

Manchester protest last night. So proud of the people of my city who showed up in their thousands in solidarity with Muslims and against the #MuslimBan

Holocaust Memorial Day

There has been much suffering of people across the globe, but nothing can compare to the scale of the suffering of the Jewish community at the hands of the Nazi's. Though time and time again we pray and hope to never see anything of that magnitude again there has been more.. Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, Darfur, and the modern day atrocities that are taking place right now, like the suffering of the Muslim minorities in Burma, and those in the Central African Republic, to name just a couple.

The problem has always been that the signs glare us in the face; increase of hate crime which I believe is fuelled by the media machine which constantly spews its propaganda. We know it has a history of creating deep divisions which then lead to bigger and much more sinister crimes against humanity. I am fearful as we see the same rhetoric today. Hate is rife, crimes against humanity are ever increasing and people have died as result.

Let us not be bystanders, let us speak up against injustice and oppression. Our lives depend on it.

Dear Pakistan...

I have driven across plains, through hills, experienced the bustle of city life, and imagined what dreams those who live on the peripheries dream.
I've mourned for our departed, recollected memories of gold, and been embraced with love by those whom I love dearly.
Dear Pakistan, thankyou.

Serve life well

Freewrite...

"One day it all comes to an end. Our weary bones return to the earth from which they came, and our souls seek a greater destination.
Our memories; the tiny fragments we leave upon people's hearts, etch into minds, weave into time, place and people are all of what we leave behind.
Serve life well." © Aisha Mirza

Be Beautiful

Freewrite...

"Be beautiful. It isn't about the way you look, but the way you carry yourself. How you withstand hardships and how you allow light to shine through the fractures. It's in the thousands of fragments you give of yourself to others, and in the sentiments behind your thoughts. True beauty is not what people see on the surface. It's in the million ways you support others while holding together; even when you feel like crumbling."

Carry the learning through.

If there is anything I learnt from 2016, it is...

Travel... it raises our awareness of the self and others. Helps us understand life from different perspectives and have experiences through different eyes.

Read... it expands our mind. It takes us on journeys beyond our imaginations and to depths unknown.

Laugh... it aids healing. Sit with those who make our hearts smile.

Love... it helps mend what is broken. It increases our compassion, and helps us to see that beauty and love not only rises above hate, but is found in unexpected places.

Pray... it keeps us grounded. It helps us remain humble. Reminds us that we have a greater purpose.

Help others... it reminds us life is limited and to use every moment well.
